In the beginning I chose many various kinds of paragraphs because at this time I did not know what would be helpful and most effective to the contrastive message of my original word dismal.
This is the paragraph I chose after going through a couple of other peers, and the professor.
“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love
This process was interesting in that I had to think about what was an interesting contrast to the word, dismal. I ended up choosing option 9, because it’s based on this idea of how happiness is not achieved easily, and it essentially seems to have this idea that if your situation is dismal, you fight to get out of it. Therefore, the paragraph seemed to work best to describe the contrast of the word.
